ABOUT SORAYA (Biography)

This prolific young star of Belly Dance was born in the United States of Middle Eastern heritage. Soraya was five years old when she began dancing with her family at countless celebrations. Since then she has continued to mesmerize audiences with her innovative and breathtaking performances. Her art has taken her all over the United States and around the world. Soraya performs in the most prestigious venues, including concert stadiums and the major Atlantic City casino showrooms. She covers the East and West coasts dancing in select special events and settings ranging from concerts and corporate promotional events to art museums and weddings.

Soraya holds a B.A. degree in anthropology and sociology with an emphasis in Middle Eastern studies. She successfully blends academics and ancient art with a modern twist. Her recent workshops at the Borders bookstore chain gave people a closer look into the true soul and spirit of authentic Egyptian belly dance and were some of the best attended, most successful events Borders has ever held.

Soraya has been described as “a modern day Cleopatra who projects the true essence of Egyptian dance with depth, glamour and passion.” With her reputation of being an artist who truly understands and feels every nuance in the music, along with her dedication to preserving the intrinsic honor of the dance, she is very selective about the audiences she performs for. Her most memorable concert was performing as an invited guest of the late King Hassan and the royal family in Morocco. Her touring has taken her as far as the major cities of India, where she produced and starred in a critically acclaimed Egyptian dance and music tour.

Hundreds of thousands of music fans have seen Soraya perform at Philadephia’s leading music venue, the E-Centre, located on the Camden waterfront. Her performances were at concerts featuring Bob Dylan, Yes, Mary J. Blige, Creed, and dozens of other mainstream rock acts. She starred as the bejeweled magical “genie”/belly dancer in a national television commercial promoting the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort. Her other television credits include Hard Copy, Entertainment Tonight, CNN's Showbiz Today, A Current Affair, and Access Hollywood. Her recent eight-volume set of authentic belly dancing videos has been met with rave reviews and worldwide acclaim, and all eight titles are selling tremendously. She has been featured in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Italian Vogue, Dance Magazine, Cairo Today, and dozens of newspapers and magazines across the United States and around the world. Soraya has performed for such corporate clients as Sun Microsystems and Ford and presented workshops at Princeton University, New York University, The University of Pennsylvania, and many other colleges and universities.

Soraya is known the world over to offer her audiences the best image of Oriental dance, and she has an innate ability to keep her audiences spellbound. Her vast knowledge of complex Arabian music composition results in an uncanny ability to understand, internalize, and interpret time signatures, rhythm, and tempo changes with her natural feel for the soul of Oriental music. Her dancing is a direct mirror of the music as she unfolds it into a story, making sense of what she hears and how the music speaks to her. The ease with which she glides, isolates, and shimmies across a stage using a fluidity of movement is very unique and only Soraya. Her incomparable stage presence and dance style have made her one of the most sought-after ethnic entertainers today. Her show is complete with the hottest “cutting edge” music, carefully selected to complement her strong and energetic dance performance. Her costumes are custom-made exclusively in Cairo, Egypt, by the famous Madame Abla, “Egypt’s designer to the stars.”

The multifaceted Soraya performs all styles with her wide range of ethnic dances from all over the Arab world, the Near East, and the Mediterranean: the classical Raks Al Sharqi (The Dance of the Orient/Cabaret), the earthy Raks Al Beledi (Fellahin), the folkloric dances of Raks Assaya (Saaidi, the cane dance from the countryside of Upper Egypt), Spanish/Moorish/Andalusian Flamenco, Beduoin Gypsy, Hegalla, Tunisian, Moroccan, Lebanese Debki, Gulf, etc. She has toured and performed with countless famous Middle Eastern singing stars, composers, and arrangers: Warda Al Jazzaria, Kadham Al Sahir, Ragheb Alameh, Assi El Hellani, Wael K Foury, Walid, Nadia Addoul, Melham Barakat, Hassan Hakmoun, Rafic Al-Aridy, Amr Diab, Nour Mehanna, Hany Shaker, Samir Sphere, Nawahl Al Zoughby, Tony Hanna, Diana Haddad, Wael K Foury, Najwa Karam, Maestro Hany Mehanna, Wadi El Safy, Samira Saeed, George Wassouf, etc.

Soraya’s virtuosity is apparent in her artistic excellence and fabulous command of the stage. She has taken Arabian dance to the highest level, and her style has become the forerunner in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dance today. Soraya feels it is important for the general public to see this dance art done correctly and with powerful theatrical grace so that audiences can experience Middle Eastern dance the way it should be seen, in the best light possible.
